About Cindy
Cindy has over 40 years in the Retail and Human Resources realm. Starting her career as a checkout clerk with Shaw’s Supermarkets while in high school, she simultaneously worked 40+ hours weekly while commuting to college after her high school graduation. Upon earning her BA in Human Resources Management, Cindy moved into the Personnel Department at Shaw’s and continued to pursue an MBA while gaining valuable real life experience in Benefits Administration, Associate Relations, Recruitment, and Training and Development .
As a relatively new HR practitioner in a period of historically low unemployment and unprecedented company growth, Cindy was tasked with exploring innovative solutions to these new challenges. Recognizing that her company’s main issue was not recruiting, but rather retention, she coined the term “human shrink”, hoping to resonate with her retail management colleagues and executive team. Cindy’s work in the area of associate retention was recognized the leadership at Shaw’s and executives from the Food Marketing Institute (FMI).
Cindy’s proudest professional accomplishment was the development of a “Personnel Coordinator” role in all stores during this period of particularly high turnover and difficult recruitment. This role, staffed 100% from internal candidates with no HR experience, transformed the culture of the organization and catapulted the careers of many of the Personnel Coordinators.
Over the course of her career, Cindy has been called upon to speak at local and regional events on the topics of sexual harassment in the workplace, identifying early career high potentials, associate retention and other related retail and HR topics.
Notable projects that Cindy has lead included testing of various methods of associate selection as predictors of future success in the supermarket industry, and development of a District Manager development center collaborating with colleagues in the UK and an international consulting group.
Changes in the industry and the company presented the most daunting leadership challenges for Cindy. While the name of the company never changed, the ownership ranged from independent family owned, to international family owned to public ownership, private equity ownership and once again back to public ownership. Leading through change and representing the interests of her associates became Cindy’s passion.
Cindy was recognized as a Top Woman In Grocery by the Food Marketing Institute in 2016 and again in 2019. She was also recognized as a Trailblazer in the industry by the Griffin Report.
Cindy resides in Cape Cod,MA and Bonita Spring FL with her husband and golden retriever. She has two grown children and has recently welcomed her first grandchild. She enjoys traveling, particularly cruising, and finds her peace gazing at the ocean.
